PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana
A Government of India scheme to promote rooftop solar for households by providing subsidies and enabling consumers to generate their own electricity and reduce power bills.
1) Scheme overview, eligibility & subsidy framework
Objective: Install rooftop solar systems in residential homes and provide free/low-cost electricity.
Eligibility:
• Indian residential households
• Valid electricity connection
• Roof ownership/usage rights
• Not availing subsidy for the same system earlier
Subsidy framework (indicative):
• Up to 2 kW: high subsidy support
• 2–3 kW: additional subsidy slab
• Above 3 kW: capped subsidy
(Actual subsidy notified by MNRE & state DISCOM)
Benefits:
• Lower electricity bills
• Net-metering income (where applicable)
• Clean energy adoption
3) Rooftop capacity & savings calculator (concept)
System size depends on:
• Monthly electricity consumption
• Available roof area
• Budget
Indicative rule:
• 1 kW solar → ~100–120 units/month generation
• 1 kW requires ~10 sq. meters roof area
Savings estimate:
• 2 kW → major bill reduction
• 3 kW → near-zero bill for average homes
• 5 kW → surplus generation possible
Subsidy Framework (MNRE + Rajasthan State)
Central Financial Assistance (MNRE)
• Up to 1 kW – Rs 30,000 subsidy
• Up to 2 kW – Rs 60,000 subsidy
• Up to 3 kW and above – Rs 78,000 (maximum central subsidy cap)
Rajasthan State Additional Subsidy
• Rs 17,000 per residential rooftop installation (as applicable under state support)
Total Benefit for Rajasthan Consumers (Indicative)
• 1 kW system → Rs 30,000 + Rs 17,000
• 2 kW system → Rs 60,000 + Rs 17,000
• 3 kW & above → Rs 78,000 + Rs 17,000
(Final subsidy disbursement subject to MNRE guidelines, DISCOM approval, and scheme conditions.)
